A fossilised dinosaur footprint, hidden for over 60 years, has been identified by palaeontologist Bruce Runnegar and Anthony Romilio from the University of Queensland. The footprint, discovered by Runnegar as a teenager, was found in a sandstone quarry in Brisbane's Albion suburb. Runnegar kept the fossil in his personal collection, showcasing it to students worldwide. In 2021, Romilio used 3D mapping software to create a digital reconstruction of the dinosaur, revealing it to be a sauropodomorph with a long neck and two hind legs. The dinosaur weighed around 144 kilograms and could run at speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour. It lived during the Carnian period, approximately 230 million years ago, making it one of the oldest known trace fossils in Australia. Runnegar, now 85, reflects on his unexpected journey into palaeontology and geology, while Romilio speculates that more fossils may be hidden within Brisbane's sandstone buildings, including the General Post Office in the city's CBD.
