With a history spanning over a century, Disney has seen its fair share of leadership changes, and this one is particularly intriguing. D'Amaro, a 54-year-old veteran at Disney, takes the helm at a time when the company is riding high on box-office successes like "Zootopia 2" and "Avatar: Fire and Ash," and its streaming business is thriving. However, there's a catch: Disney's domestic theme parks have seen a decline in foreign visitors, a trend linked to the Trump administration's immigration policies and global trade tensions.
D'Amaro's task is clear: leverage Disney's vast intellectual property to create blockbuster movies and theme park attractions, while also driving streaming growth and expanding its sports business. It's a tall order, but with a $36 billion annual revenue and 185,000 employees worldwide, the Experiences division is a powerhouse.
The decision to appoint D'Amaro comes after a tumultuous period for Disney, which saw Bob Iger return to the CEO role in 2022 after a disastrous tenure by his hand-picked successor, Bob Chapek. This time, Disney took a meticulous approach, forming a succession planning committee in 2023 and enlisting James Gorman, a former Morgan Stanley executive, to lead the search.
While external candidates were considered, it was widely expected that Disney would promote from within, and D'Amaro, along with Dana Walden, quickly emerged as the top contenders. D'Amaro has been with Disney since 1998 and has led the charge on a $60 billion investment into cruise ships, resorts, and theme parks. He also oversees Walt Disney Imagineering, responsible for designing and developing immersive experiences worldwide.
In an interview with CNBC, Gorman praised D'Amaro's vision and understanding of Disney's unique creative spirit. "He has an outstanding record of business achievement, collaborating with some of the biggest names in entertainment to bring their stories to life in our parks, showcasing the power of combining Disney storytelling with cutting-edge technology," Gorman said.
Dana Walden, who joined Disney in 2019 as co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, will now take on the newly created role of president and chief creative officer of The Walt Disney Company, reporting to D'Amaro. Walden has overseen Disney's streaming business and its entertainment media, news, and content businesses.
"The heart of the Disney company is its creativity and the amazing IP produced over decades," Gorman explained. "Dana, working with Josh, will ensure that the best creativity permeates all of our businesses."
