Big news in the NFL coaching carousel! The Baltimore Ravens are set to interview Denver Broncos' special teams coach, Darren Rizzi, for their head coaching position, according to Mike Klis of 9News. This is a significant move, especially considering the Ravens are looking to fill the shoes of a legend – John Harbaugh, who spent an impressive 18 seasons as Baltimore's head coach, and himself came from a special teams background.
Rizzi's name might sound familiar; he was also in the running for the Giants' head coaching job before they ultimately chose John Harbaugh.
Now, here's where it gets interesting. Rizzi is currently in his first season with the Broncos, but he has a history with Sean Payton, having worked with him in New Orleans. He even stayed on the Saints' coaching staff when Dennis Allen took over from Payton. And this is the part most people miss: Rizzi even stepped in as the interim head coach when Allen was fired during the 2024 season, leading the team to a 3-5 record in that role.
Before his time with the Broncos, Rizzi had a long tenure with the Dolphins from 2009-2018, including nine seasons as their special teams coordinator. This experience certainly makes him a strong candidate.
Could Rizzi be the next head coach of the Ravens? What do you think about the Ravens potentially hiring a special teams-focused coach to replace Harbaugh? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
