Imagine a world where vaccinations are administered without the stress of human interaction, especially for shy animals. This is the reality that Tony Cholerton, a former zookeeper and motorcycle engineer, is striving to create. His invention, a robotic vaccination machine called Robovacc, could revolutionize how we approach wildlife conservation and disease control. It all started with Cinta, a tiger cub at the London Zoo who was too timid to be vaccinated by the keepers. To solve this, Cholerton designed Robovacc. This clever device, controlled remotely, successfully administered vaccinations to Cinta without causing any distress. The tiger simply continued eating her meal while the needle did its work.

Now retired, Cholerton envisions a fully automated version of his invention, Autovacc, to tackle the complex issue of bovine TB, which is primarily spread to cattle by other cows. For over a decade, the culling of badgers has been a contentious method in England to control the spread of bovine TB, while wildlife charities have been exploring vaccination as an alternative.

The current methods of badger vaccination are costly and time-consuming. They involve trapping badgers, holding them overnight, and then injecting them. Autovacc, however, could vaccinate a colony of up to 20 badgers without human intervention, with each animal spending only a minute or two in the process.

Cholerton's vision is that scientists and farmers could use his invention. He believes that it would provide scientists with the means to demonstrate the effectiveness of badger vaccination, while also providing farmers with a way to tackle the TB problem in cattle.

After the initial success with Cinta, Cholerton adapted Robovacc for other animals at the zoo, including lions and Diana monkeys. The machine proved particularly effective on carnivores. Cholerton spent his evenings refining his invention, developing a fully automatic version that uses sensors to detect the animal's rear end.

The Autovacc machine for badgers has been tested on ring-tailed coatis. The animals are lured into a Perspex tunnel with food bait. Smart technology prevents the same animal from being vaccinated more than once. When an animal is vaccinated, it is marked with nanoparticles. If the animal returns, sensors are activated, and it exits through a different door. If the animal hasn't been vaccinated, it enters the vaccination section, where its movement is briefly restricted for the injection.

Several safety mechanisms are in place to ensure the animal's safety. Cholerton hopes that conservation scientists, charities, and farmers will soon begin testing his Autovacc machine. He believes that collaboration is key to the success of this technology.

Rosie Wood, the chair of Badger Trust, has expressed that the technology is promising. However, she also points out that vaccinating badgers may not have a measurable impact on bovine TB rates in cattle.
