A teacher has received a two-year ban from her profession after a panel determined that she inappropriately suggested to a parent that their child was being singled out by other staff members. Erin Dempsey, who taught history at Furze Platt Senior School located in Maidenhead, Berkshire, also improperly communicated with the student via WhatsApp using her personal mobile device, which raised significant concerns regarding professional boundaries.
Additionally, it was revealed that Dempsey tampered with official records, including attendance and detention logs, further violating ethical standards. A representative from the school emphasized the institution's strong commitment to ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of its entire community, particularly the students.
The Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) panel concluded that Dempsey's registration should be revoked for two years, after which she must apply to regain her teaching credentials if she aspires to return to the classroom. In an email correspondence with the parent, Dempsey claimed that their child was "not the only one experiencing difficulties" with a colleague. The panel characterized this statement as both "inappropriate and unprofessional."
The panel noted that Dempsey's interactions with the student through WhatsApp and email were quite extensive and deemed them to be inappropriate, as they rarely pertained to the educational content she was responsible for delivering. While it seemed that Dempsey was motivated by a genuine desire to assist the student, her actions represented a serious violation of teaching standards.
Dempsey had been employed at the school from September 2023 until her resignation in April 2024, following her suspension in March of the same year. Although she was certified as a teacher in Canada, her status in England was classified as unqualified by the TRA.
The spokesperson for Furze Platt Senior School reiterated that the judgment underscored the significance of the safeguarding training and protocols that the school had put in place. It was the school community that raised initial concerns, prompting swift action, including investigations and collaboration with external agencies, which ultimately led to the TRA referral. The representative affirmed that the institution is dedicated to upholding the highest safeguarding standards for all staff members and remains focused on supporting and guiding students to develop into successful young adults.
