According to a municipal spokesperson, Jake Fulton, this practice can lead to confusion among crews assessing potholes. If they spot a painted pothole, they might assume it's already been logged for repair, potentially causing delays. Fulton emphasizes the importance of proper reporting through the 311 system or online forms, as this ensures the city's resources are allocated efficiently. He also highlights the safety concerns of spray-painting in the street, suggesting that it's not a suitable method for addressing potholes.
The city's pothole repair process is prioritized based on size and location. Potholes measuring at least 25 centimeters wide and eight centimeters deep are classified as priority 1 and should be fixed within seven business days on major streets. However, repairs on side streets can take up to 30 business days. Priority 2 potholes, which don't meet the width and depth criteria, are addressed as resources permit, typically within 12 months. Fulton advises that spray-painting priority 1 potholes is unnecessary and may even hinder the repair process.
This issue of pothole repair is particularly relevant given the recent increase in pothole reports in Halifax. The city has already repaired over 10,000 potholes this year, with the number of reports rising sixfold compared to the previous year.
